# Raa Labs

> Raa Labs builds and operates vessel data infrastructure for fleet-scale maritime operations. The company provides the independent data layer between vessel systems and the applications that depend on them — collecting, standardising, monitoring, and delivering reliable high-frequency vessel data to fleet operators' teams, systems, and third parties.

Raa Labs was founded in 2018 and is based in Lysaker, Norway, with 30+ employees. The company grew out of the Wilhelmsen Group, a global maritime industrial conglomerate with 160 years in the industry. Customers span every major shipping segment and include Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Seaspan, Maersk, and Eastern Pacific Shipping.

## What Raa Labs does

Raa Labs is not an analytics vendor, data logger, or integrated platform. It provides the vessel data foundation: an independent infrastructure layer that produces one trusted dataset across a fleet, which any analytics provider, reporting system, or third party can consume. Key capabilities:

- High-frequency data capture from vessel systems (navigation, propulsion, fuel, machinery, environment, OEM systems)
- Standardisation into fleet-wide data models — ISO 19848, DNV VIS, JSMEA, and custom naming served simultaneously
- Fleet-wide data health monitoring: connection status, latency, data quality, alerting when streams degrade
- Structured API access: measurements (time series), metadata, and statistics endpoints
- Token-based access control for sharing data subsets with charterers, class societies, or vendors

## Certifications

- Bureau Veritas Type Approval for IACS UR E26/E27 cyber resilience requirements (received July 2026), covering cyber resilience of ships and of on-board systems and equipment.

## Products

- [Vessel Data Infrastructure](https://www.raalabs.com/): The core offering — the Foundation (ingestion, standardisation, calculations, governance, API access, portal) plus the Function (the operational discipline of monitoring, investigating, and acting on data health).
- **RaaEDGE**: Onboard IoT platform. Captures data directly from vessel systems, standardises at the source, handles buffering during connectivity loss, and delivers securely to the cloud. Includes built-in LoRaWAN wireless network for retrofit sensors.
- **Cloud Connect**: Cloud-to-cloud integration. Brings data from existing onboard collectors into the foundation without new hardware. Fleets can mix RaaEDGE and Cloud Connect per vessel.

## Operating models

The Foundation is always operated by Raa Labs. The Function can sit with the customer or with Raa Labs:

- **Self-Governed** (Data): customer runs vessel data operations with their own tools and processes.
- **Governed** (Data + Visibility): Raa Labs provides fleet-wide visibility into data health; the customer decides how to act.
- **Assured** (Data + Visibility + Action): Raa Labs operates the vessel data function on the customer's behalf.

Different vessels in one fleet can run different models, and models can change over time.

## Customer outcomes

- Wallenius Wilhelmsen achieved a proven 7% fuel saving using high-frequency vessel data from the RaaEDGE platform (reported in Tradewinds). CEO Lasse Kristoffersen: "I have not seen any company that has come further in digitalizing ships' operational data and delivering it to the actual decision-makers."
- Seaspan, the world's largest independent container vessel owner, deployed RaaEDGE fleet-wide for decarbonisation, AI-readiness, and customised data delivery per charterer. Sebastian Sala, Director of Business Intelligence: "Every charterer has unique requirements. With RaaEDGE we can tailor data deliveries to each partner, while at the same time meeting our own needs as a vessel owner."
- Solstad Offshore optimised battery pack usage on offshore vessels through real-time battery data (collaboration with Corvus Energy, VPS, and Vard).
